I always love walking into a family’s home to document their new reality with a newborn baby. This couple was absolutely fabulous and so was their home – a completely renovated and updated Victorian home in a beautiful Hamilton neighbourhood. So beautiful that as I walked down the street to their place I passed by four artists that had set up easels right there on the sidewalk and were painting the houses in the area. I felt like I was in a movie or something. It was almost surreal. And it made me want to paint, then I remembered my artistic talent ends with photography. So I hiked up my camera gear a little higher on my shoulder and walked up the steps to meet their newborn daughter.
We started in their master bedroom because it had a gorgeous bay window and a ton of natural light. It was so perfect and bright, I could have done the entire session just in that one room. From early on in our conversations this couple expressed wanting to include their dog in some of the photos. Depending on a dog’s temperament this can be done. Bringing a new baby into a home is a big change for animals that can impact their usual behaviour and I always put safety as my number one priority. If a dog is hyper or out of sorts I won’t allow it to be close to the newborn while I’m there capturing memories. But this sweet whippet was so gentle and kind, we were able to capture a pretty fabulous photo of her with baby Finley.
Summer newborn sessions are extra special because when the weather is warm we can head outside to document baby’s first home. I love taking pictures of a family at their front door. Whether they will live here for a short time or for 50 years, that photograph is so significant of this particular time in their lives.
