Every summer since our firstborn was little we have travelled south along the east coast, exploring different cities and using these as history learning experiences for all of us. Last year we went to Charleston, Hilton Head and Savannah. Ottawa, Ontario is the capital of Canada and we have always had it on our wish list of places to visit, specifically during July 1st for Canada Day. Being the nation’s capital, the city holds the biggest Canada Day celebration. This year Canada turned 149 years old. Such a young country! As you can imagine next year for its 15oth birthday Ottawa will be so much busier, so we figured it was best to avoid the bigger crowds and travel this year. You guys, Ottawa delivered… In the weeks leading up to our trip I was too busy to thoroughly research all of the amazing things to do and we ended up “winging it” with only a short list of to do’s. I feel like we just touched on all this city has to offer, leaving lots enough to do when we come back another time – probably for winterlude when all the kids are old enough to skate the canal. We toured the Parliament Buildings, watched the changing of the guards, visited both the Museum of Nature and the History Museum, walked the canal down to the footbridge to see the Love Locks, and of course joined in on the festivities on Canada Day with fireworks at night. It was a busy few days and we walked everywhere!
On vacation I always aim to capture lifestyle photos of our family exploring and having fun. They are not always technically perfect, some of them can be classified as downright snapshots, but they keep the memories alive of our trip and in the end that’s most important to me. I sometimes try my hand at landscape photography and every time I end up loving the images that include my kids in some way. Even if they are tiny in the frame, they are a part of the image and it becomes more meaningful to me.
Here are some images that tell a little bit of our vacation story. Enjoy!
