I always start off my first birthday sessions with lovely portraits of baby. This little guy was totally on the move from the start. He was happy and kept his mama and I working hard the entire time. He flashed his two little bottom teeth more than once. A sweet little detail that’s only there for a limited time. I also captured his teeny toes and his darling lashes. He loved all the wooden toys that I have in the studio, especially the wood cake that I use as a stand in for a real cake smash. It’s cleaner, quicker, and every baby loves it, which is not the case for real cake. When I used to do cake smashes, more often than not, baby would end up in tears and parents would leave stressed because they didn’t get the happy cake-smashing images they envisioned. I didn’t like the feeling of parents leaving with that worry because I KNEW the images that matter are the ones that document baby, not a fancy baked good. After a year or two of that, I decided to buy a wooden cake toy and it was the right decision. Every single baby reaches out to play with it the second we put it down and it never causes stress or tears.
