Sometimes expecting parents are not able to book their newborn session in advance, or sometimes other reasons, be it health or cultural reasons keep families home for the first few weeks. That’s perfectly fine and why I offer older newborn sessions. I consider a baby an “older newborn” when they are over 3-weeks old, but still young enough for me to swaddle.
If you have booked a studio newborn session, but aren’t able to come into the studio before baby turns 3-weeks old (such as an extended stay in the NICU), your session will automatically be converted to an older newborn one.
Older newborns still have access to the beautiful outfits, diaper covers, swaddles, knit blankets and props that I have in my studio wardrobe. These items are all in a simple and natural style and colour scheme. Your baby will most likely be awake and alert, but don’t worry because this creates the cutest expressions and interaction with the camera.
I was excited to welcome this *almost* 1-month-old little boy into my studio for his newborn session recently. Typically, newborns are photographed within the first two weeks of life, but this little guy’s mom needed more time to recover from birth, so we scheduled his session a few weeks later. This made him an “older newborn,” but that didn’t stop him from being an incredible model!
At one month old, this little boy had beautiful eye contact that made for stunning photos. Typically, older newborns are more alert and awake than their fresh, new counterparts, but this little guy gave us the best of both worlds. He was awake for a good portion of the session, giving us plenty of opportunities to capture his wide-eyed wonder, but also fell asleep, allowing us to capture those precious sleepy moments as well.
When photographing newborns, it’s important to create a comfortable and safe environment for them. We used a variety of props and blankets to create a cozy, comfortable space for the little guy. We also made sure to take breaks as needed to feed and change him, allowing him to stay happy and comfortable throughout the session.
One of my favorite parts of this session was capturing the little boy with his parents. Their love for their little one was palpable, and it was so special to see them interact with him and hold him close for photos. These family photos are sure to be treasured for years to come.
This little guy was an absolute joy to work with, and his photos turned out stunning. His parents left the session with memories that they will cherish forever, and I feel so grateful to have been a part of this special moment in their lives. Here is a small selection of their photos.
